What if I am visiting from out of town?

We welcome all visitors, whether they are new to Toastmasters or are members from other clubs. You are welcome to come and visit our club as a guest.

What can I expect?

Members of the elected Club Executive develop the program for each weekly meeting. The meeting has four portions as well as a mid-point break and runs on a pre-determined schedule with the total meeting time being two hours. Club members volunteer to participate in the various roles and functions and learn by expressing themselves in these roles. Such roles include chairing the business meeting, providing toasts, and delivering prepared speeches.

To assist in the operation of the meeting, there is a timer, a grammarian, an “ah counter”, a impromptu topic leader, a business meeting chairman, a Master of Ceremonies (Toastmaster of the evening), a joke master, various prepared speakers and their assigned evaluators, plus a general evaluator who gives an overview of the entire meeting. Newer members start with less demanding roles and slowly take on more demanding positions as they gain experience and confidence. Seasoned members are provided as mentors to assist in each new member’s development.

All members begin with a Communication and Leadership Manuals that contains outlines for 10 speech projects. These manuals are a guide to develop prepared speeches for presentation to the club.

All members work  toward goals, including Toastmaster Designations, which signify achievement in their speaking skills.

Everyone is provided support during their development and everyone learns at their own pace.

As you can see, a regular club meeting is very well organized and it combines several elements of practical communication. The sooner you get started, the sooner you will start to see improvement!

Guests and members are expected to come at least 15 minutes prior to the start of the meeting to get acquainted with other members and get prepared for various roles. Speakers are expected to come at least 30 minutes prior to the meeting to set up the room (if necessary) for their presentation.

Typically you will want to leave extra time before the meeting to make sure your presentation is ready before you present it to the Toastmaster audience.

If the presentation you are giving has special requirements (such as a computer, overhead, projector, or lighting), speak with the Sgt. At Arms prior to the meeting to arrange for extra electrical outlets or additional assistance.

Why should I join your club?

There are many Toastmaster clubs in the Edmonton area. What matters is that you find a club that provides a positive, friendly atmosphere to help you grow and develop. We feel that our club provides this type of environment.
