Members Helping Members
Club members of Southern Lights Toastmasters Club learn to speak effectively and efficiently through an international education program. While we are all learning at our own level and at our own pace, we focus on giving support and encouragement through balanced and positive evaluations to all participants throughout the meeting. That combined with growth in leadership skills makes Toastmasters an opportunity for advanced education and improvement.
Every meeting is based on a finely honed agenda, and the theme varies each week. One week you might hear a first-time ice-breaker speech from a new toastmaster, and the next week you might be able to appreciate a professionally crafted example of speech arts. Each week brings the opportunity to participate in short impromptu speeches called Table Topics.
Southern Lights Toastmasters Club was chartered in 1979. Southern Lights was chartered when another club, Northern Lights, had over 40 members. When clubs grow, the members don’t have as many opportunities to speak, learn. and grow at the weekly meetings, and a new club is formed. Two of the original Charter Members remain active in Southern Lights, which has met regularly since its establishment over 40 years ago.
The designation Distinguished Toastmaster is granted by Toastmasters International to individuals who have achieved all the requisite communication and leadership goals. Southern Lights is proud to have four Distinguished Toastmasters. One of the DTMs is also the Past International President of Toastmasters International.
